Houston accelerates growth by accelerating entrepreneurship

In August of 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas with devastating results, displacing tens of thousands of Houston area residents and impacting untold numbers of businesses in and around the city. But whereas most mayors in the aftermath of such an event would have focused on building back their city, Houston mayor Sylvester Turner took a more innovative approach: he proposed building the city “forward.” For this, he turned to Microsoft—specifically, a partnership between Microsoft, the city of Houston, Rice University, and other public and private entities aimed at developing Houston into the nation’s first truly smart “smart city” and a mega-hub for startups and entrepreneurs. Watch this informative video to discover how programs like the Microsoft Ion Smart Cities Accelerator in midtown Houston are not only helping the city recover from the costliest hurricane in U.S. history, but also spurring economic growth by increasing the town’s digital capabilities and fostering entrepreneurship.

“On Dasher, on Dancer, on Prancer, on Surface!”

Just about every kid has wondered at least once what it would be like if animals could talk. What would they say? What would you ask them? Would we even be able to understand one another? For six-year-old Lucy, these innocent ponderings transcend mere curiosity and enter the realm of the possible thanks to her mother’s Surface tablet and AI-powered Microsoft Translator.

With these two leading technologies at her side, young Lucy ventures into the snowy woods and speaks with a couple of reindeer to discover answers to the holiday season’s most pressing questions. What will she find out? Watch this heartwarming and “endeering” video to see how Microsoft technology (plus a dash of childlike imagination) is helping to connect everyone—and every creature—on the planet.

“Oldest nerd in Guatemala” has a lot to be thankful for—and a lot more still to give

For Otto Knoke, the self-described “oldest nerd in Guatemala,” every day is a gift—and one that he pays back to the best of his abilities every day. Twenty years ago, right around the same time this high-tech early adopter was making a name for himself by modernizing the Guatemalan banking industry, Knoke was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and given only two years to live.

Never one to back down from a challenge, Knoke began researching how technology could help him overcome his condition and thrive—a determination and drive which have paid off. Today, after beating the odds and surviving the disease for nearly two decades, Knoke has become the first person in Guatemala to use Microsoft’s new eye-tracking software for Windows 10, called Eye Control, enabling him to literally type with his eyes. But what’s even more impressive is that he uses Eye Control to operate Microsoft BI to analyze his clients’ business data and uncover insights that ultimately help improve their operations.

For Knoke, this revolutionary Microsoft technology has not only helped him continue working as before and allowed his own business to thrive, but more important, it’s enabled him to communicate more meaningfully with his loved ones and strengthen those relationships. Learn Otto Knoke’s full story by watching this truly fascinating and inspiring video.
